Our report, Welf(AI)re: A Racial and Gender Injustice Analysis of AI and Automated Decision-Making in UK Social Security, examines the use of AI, algorithms and automated decision-making systems known to be used in the UK’s welfare system, and the impacts on Black women and Black gender-expansive people.

In this year’s King’s Speech, there was no AI Bill in sight. The Government announced instead a ‘Regulating for Growth Bill’ – rather than regulating to prevent the human rights abuses that inevitably accompany the endless pursuit of growth.

Last month our Advocacy Director, Emmanuelle, travelled to Berlin to join the Cables of Resistance‍ movement conference against ‘Big Tech’. We presented our work on anti-Blackness, the alt-right, and racist acts of violence and joined discussions on a range of urgent issues - from AI and raw materials, to labour and militarisation. 

On the 18th December, the Government announced its long-awaited Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy (“the strategy”). In the below, we assess the VAWG Strategy against our organisational focus area, the intersection of technology and VAWG and the impacts on Black women and gender-expansive people specifically. 

The most Black women in UK history were voted in the General Election, but we remain concerned at the lack of support to stop abuse Black women candidates faced during their campaigns.
